Got a call near the Ventura County Fairgrounds from a guy who was sitting in his 2005 E320, key in hand, ignition doing nothing. No crank, no dash authorization, just the steering lock staying locked solid.
He had already been to a parts store. They tested his battery. Fine. He bought a new CR2025 for the fob. Still nothing. He was one Google search away from calling a tow to the dealer.
When I got there I pulled his key and checked it first. The IYZ-3312 remote head key looked fine physically. Blade was worn but not cracked. I put my diagnostic on the OBD port and read the EIS. It was seeing the key's infrared signal but failing the transponder handshake. The NEC chip data on the key had corrupted, which happens on these W211 keys when the battery dies and the fob sits drained for a while.
I wrote fresh key data to a new remote head key, cut the HU64 blade on my mobile machine, and paired it to his EIS. Then I did the part that matters: cycled the ignition ten times, tested remote lock and unlock from 30 feet, checked that the ESL was releasing clean with no grinding.
He sat in the driver's seat, turned the key, and just listened to the engine idle for a minute. Didn't even put it in gear. Like he needed to hear it run before he believed it.
Whole thing took about 40 minutes in the parking lot. No flatbed, no dealer wait.
