Got a call from a guy at the Ventura Promenade whose 2001 E320 left him standing in the parking lot. Key turned in the ignition, dash lit up, starter cranked, but no fire. Classic immobilizer lockout. He said it started doing this intermittently a week ago, then just quit for good.
I pulled up and he had the key sitting on the roof of the car like it personally offended him.
First thing I checked was the EIS module, the N73 unit on the steering column. Read it with my diagnostic setup and the transponder response was dropping in and out. The key's transponder coil, the little antenna ring inside the bow of the key, had a hairline crack in the solder. Common on these W210 keys that are 20-plus years old now. The mechanical blade was worn down too, barely grabbing the wafers in the ignition.
Cut a fresh HU64 blade on site, transferred the electronics to a new shell, resoldered the coil connection, and re-tested the transponder read against the EIS. Solid signal every time. Cranked on the first turn.
He told me the dealer quoted him weeks of wait time for a replacement key from the parts warehouse, plus a tow to get the car there. He almost sold the car instead. That is the part that gets me. People think a dead key means a dead car.
