Got a call from a guy near Round Mountain Trail in Camarillo. His 2011 E350 wouldn't start. Dashboard said "Key not recognized," and the steering column was locked hard. He had already tried the emergency blade slot behind the keyless-go button cover. Nothing.
He told me the chrome key shell had cracked weeks ago. He superglued it. That held until it didn't.
When I got there the key was in two pieces on his passenger seat, the NEC chip board still inside the back half. The 5WK47283 PCB looked fine, no cracked solder, no corrosion on the IR emitter window. So the play was a shell swap, not a full replacement.
I moved the PCB and blade into a new housing, seated a fresh CR2025, and tested IR communication against the EIS module through my diagnostic setup. The EIS read the key on the first attempt. Engine turned over, keyless-go responded from three feet away, all four buttons worked clean.
The whole thing took about twenty minutes on his driveway. He said the dealer quoted him a wait of over a week just to get an appointment, plus the key would ship separately. He was back on the road the same afternoon.
Sometimes the electronics are perfectly fine and it's just the cheap chrome shell that Mercedes put around them giving up.
