Got a call from a guy near Centennial Plaza in Oxnard. His 1998 SLK had been sitting in the driveway for three days because the key would crank but the engine died instantly. Classic immobilizer lockout. He had already tried his spare key, same thing. Both keys, both dead on immobilizer handshake.
He was pretty calm about it, which told me he had already gone through the angry phase earlier in the week.
I pulled up, popped the hood latch manually, and got my laptop connected to the diagnostic port. The EIS was reading both keys as unrecognized. On these R170s, the transponder lives in the key head and talks to the EIS module mounted in the steering column. When the EIS loses its key data, which happens on older units with degraded memory, it stops recognizing anything you stick in it.
I pulled the EIS, benched it on my work surface right there in his driveway, and re-adapted the key data back into the module. Then reinstalled, tested both keys, confirmed the infrared remote locked and unlocked, and ran ignition cycles on each one.
The whole thing took about 40 minutes. He just sat on his front step scrolling his phone and looked up when I walked over with two working keys.
He had already called the dealer. They quoted him a multi-week timeline because they wanted to order a new EIS and keys from Germany. I did it on his driveway before lunch.
