Got a call from a guy near the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center in Oxnard. His 2010 SLK was sitting in the lot, one key broken at the head where the plastic meets the blade, the other key left at home an hour away. He had been out there all morning and was already sunburned.
I pulled up, set my bag on the passenger seat, and got the EIS read through the OBD port. The R171 SLK runs the NEC chip inside the EIS module, so I needed to pull the key data, generate the new transponder profile, and cut the HU64 blade to match. The FCC ID on his broken fob read IYZ-3312, four-button remote head key, CR2025 battery, which lined up.
Cut the blade on my Condor XC-Mini, programmed the chip to sync with his EIS, and paired the remote. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All four buttons. Then the real test: start the engine. Fired right up. I had him cycle it twice more just to be sure.
He kept looking at the broken key and back at the new one like he was comparing them. They matched. He said he had called the dealer first and they quoted him a week wait because the key had to be ordered from the parts warehouse.
He drove home with a working key in about 25 minutes. No dealer appointment, no tow, no week without his car.
