Got a call from a guy on Oxnard Boulevard who was sitting in a parking lot with a 2011 SLK350 that would crank but not turn over. Dash just said "Key not recognized" and sat there.
He told me on the phone he had one key left and it had been acting up for a week. Sometimes it would start, sometimes not. He figured the battery, swapped in a fresh CR2025, same thing. That is actually a classic sign the transponder side is failing, not the remote side. The CR2025 only powers the lock and unlock buttons. The immobilizer chip talks to the EIS module on its own power through the antenna ring.
When I got there, I checked the key first. The chrome shell on these 4-button IYZ-3312 fobs is known for developing hairline cracks right along the seam, and his had one. Enough flex that the board inside was losing contact intermittently. That is why it worked sometimes and not others.
I cut a new HU64 blade on my portable machine, moved the job to programming through the OBD port. The FBS3 system on the R171 lets me write the new key to the EIS without pulling the module, which is a big deal because on older W220 and W208 platforms that was not always the case.
Tested the remote, tested the start, cycled the ignition a few times. He sat there turning it on and off like he was waiting for it to quit again. It did not.
The whole thing took about 35 minutes. He mentioned the dealer quoted him days of wait time and a tow to get it there. He drove home instead.
