Got a call from a guy near Ventura County Medical Center with a 2002 SLK230. He said the key would slide into the ignition but nothing happened. No crank, no dash lights, nothing. He had already replaced the CR2025 battery thinking that was the fix. It wasn't.
I got there and the car was sitting in the lot, top down, afternoon sun beating on it. He looked tired. Said he had been on hold with the dealer for twenty minutes before he hung up and searched for a mobile locksmith instead.
First thing I did was test his existing key's infrared signal. Dead. The IR transmitter in the key head had failed, so the EIS module couldn't authenticate it. The mechanical blade still turned the lock cylinder, but without that IR handshake, the immobilizer wasn't releasing.
I had an IYZ-3312 blank in the van. Cut the HU64 blade to match his locks, then paired the new key to his EIS using the existing working slot data. Tested all four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Cycled the ignition three times, let the immobilizer settle, confirmed a clean start each time.
He sat in the driver's seat and turned it over himself. Paused for a second like he was waiting for it to fail again. It didn't.
Whole thing took about 40 minutes. He drove out of that lot same afternoon instead of waiting on a dealer order from Germany.
