Got a call from a guy near the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. His 1999 SLK230 wouldn't start. Key turns, starter cranks, engine catches for half a second and dies. Classic immobilizer rejection.
He had already been through it with the dealer. They told him the EIS module needed to be replaced and the key re-synced, quoted him a timeline measured in weeks because the part had to be sourced. He drove the car home on his spare key, which still worked, and started looking for alternatives.
I got there and pulled the key apart on his trunk lid. The 5WK47283 key head looked fine physically, but the CR2025 was reading low. Infrared emitters on these R170 keys are power-hungry compared to later RF remotes, and a battery sitting at 2.7 volts instead of 3.0 is enough to kill the handshake between the key and the N73 EIS module. The second key still worked because its battery was fresher.
New CR2025 in, tested the IR window with my frequency tester, confirmed signal output. Key went in, turned, car started and stayed running. Then I tested the lock and unlock buttons, cycled the soft top from the key, and ran the spare through the same check just to be thorough.
His EIS was fine the whole time. A battery that read "not dead" on a regular tester was dead enough for Mercedes infrared. He kept both keys and drove off in about fifteen minutes.
