Got a call from someone over near Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. They had walked out after a long shift and the 2001 SLK just sat there. Key turned to position two, dash lit up, then nothing. Cranked and cranked. No start.
They had already called the Mercedes dealer. The answer was: tow it in, leave it, order a new key by VIN from Germany, and wait. Could be a week, could be three. Meanwhile, no car.
I got there in the van, pulled the key, and checked the transponder side first. The EIS module on these R170 SLKs reads the transponder through the steering lock assembly, and when that communication fails, the engine immobilizer kills the start signal. The original key's transponder had just stopped talking.
Cut a new blade on the HU64 blank right on the hood using the original as a reference, then programmed the transponder to the EIS through the OBD-II port. The IR remote portion got paired through the onboard procedure, lock and unlock cycling with the key in the ignition. Tested all four buttons, cycled the ignition three times, confirmed the immobilizer released clean every time.
They sat in the driver's seat for a second after it fired up, just listening to the engine idle. Didn't say much. Just looked relieved.
Whole thing was done in about 35 minutes. No tow, no wait, no second trip. A fraction of what the dealer route would have cost in time alone.
