Got a call from a guy near Cross at Grant Park in Ventura. His 2008 SLK had one working key left and the remote buttons on it were doing nothing. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, all dead. The blade still turned the ignition and the car started fine, so the transponder side was good, but he was walking up to the door every time like it was 1994.
I pulled the shell apart on his trunk lid. The CR2025 was not dead, but the negative battery clip had a film of corrosion right where it contacts the cell. Green tinge, barely visible unless you tilted it in the light. Cleaned the contacts, tested the board with a known good battery, and all four buttons came back immediately.
Then I cut and programmed his spare. Fresh IYZ-3312 blank, cut on my portable machine right there in the parking area, transponder registration through the OBD port on the EIS, and the remote learned through the on-board procedure. Tested ignition start, all four remote buttons, and the blade in the door lock. Both keys working, nothing left to guess about.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him over a week turnaround. The whole visit took me about 30 minutes. He just kept clicking the lock button on the old key, watching the mirrors fold, like he had missed it.
