Got a call around 9:40 PM from a guy over by Surfers Point in Ventura. His 2000 Mercedes-Benz SLK would not start. He had been at dinner, came back, and the key turned but the immobilizer killed the engine every time. Dash just showed the little key icon and nothing else happened.

I pulled up about 25 minutes later. He was sitting on the curb next to the car with the top down, which honestly looked pretty good sitting there under the streetlights. He said he thought the car was done.
Cracked the remote head key open on my toolbox. The CR2025 looked fine, but the board underneath had a thin green film along the battery contact traces and around the base of the NEC chip. Classic moisture damage on these R170 fobs. Cleaned the board with contact cleaner, hit the terminals with a fiberglass pen, dropped in a fresh CR2025, and reassembled.
Key in, turn, engine caught on the first try. The EIS module picked up the transponder signal clean. He just sat there for a second with his hands on the wheel like he was making sure it was real.
The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes, on site, at almost 10 PM on a weeknight. No tow, no waiting days for a dealer appointment.
