I got a call from a property out near the East Area 2 side of Santa Paula. Older gentleman, retired, long driveway, stone pavers.
His 2011 Porsche Cayenne was sitting in front of the garage and he was holding his fob in two pieces, more or less. The car-shaped housing had cracked clean across the nose from a drop, and the emergency blade was rattling loose inside the shell. He'd already called the dealer. They told him the whole unit needed to be replaced and programmed as a new key. He was expecting to pay close to that number and wait for parts.
When I got there, I asked him to hold the cracked halves together and see if the car still recognized it. It did. The vehicle saw the fob just fine. The electronics inside were intact. The only thing broken was the plastic.
I backed up his key data before touching anything, then transferred the working internals into a fresh replacement housing, seated a new CR2032 in correctly, and went through the full check: lock, unlock, every button, push-to-start, and walk-away behavior. Everything matched what it did before he dropped it.
He was quiet for a second when it was done. He said the dealer never once mentioned that the electronics could survive a cracked shell. They just quoted the full replacement and moved on.
That's the part that gets me. A shell swap is a fraction of a full key replacement. The car didn't care about the cracked plastic. It just needed the right electronics inside a housing that held together.
