I got a call on a Tuesday evening from a woman parked near the Limoneira building in Downtown Santa Paula. She'd been at a meeting, walked back out to her 2012 Cayenne, and the car just sat there. No response to the fob. Doors wouldn't unlock from the handle. She thought the battery died, but the interior lights came on when she used the emergency blade inside the fob to open the door manually. The car had power. It just didn't recognize her key.
She'd already called the dealer. They told her to have the car towed in, that they'd need to verify the fob, and that she should plan on a few days minimum before a replacement could be programmed. She asked if there was another option. Someone gave her my number.
I got there about forty minutes later. First thing I did was pop the fob open and check the CR2032. It read low enough to explain everything. These Cayenne fobs can limp along with a dying cell for weeks, then just quit without a lot of drama. Swapped the battery, reassembled the fob, and walked around the car testing every door handle, the rear hatch response, and the instrument cluster to see if it was picking up the key. It was. Every function came back.
She asked what it would have cost to replace the whole fob. I told her that's a real job and it's not cheap on these, but she didn't need that today.
She needed a CR2032 and someone who showed up.
