Got a call from a woman near San Buenaventura State Beach in Ventura. Her 2000 Echo would crank for about two seconds, then cut out. Classic immobilizer rejection. She had already been to another locksmith who gave her a new key, and it worked for maybe ten days before this started.
She thought her car had an electrical problem. Nope.
I pulled out my VVDI2 and read the chip in her existing key. The other locksmith had programmed a 4D67 chip. The 2000 Echo runs the older Toyota immobilizer system that expects a 4C glass transponder. A 4D chip can sometimes fool the initial handshake, passes registration, car starts fine for a while. But over multiple drive cycles Toyota's ECU runs a deeper verification loop, and the mismatch catches up. The engine cranks, the immobilizer kills fuel after two seconds, and you are standing in a parking lot with a key that worked yesterday.
I programmed a fresh 4C chip matched to her ECU, cut a new TOY43 blade from the door lock decode, and while I was at it swapped the CR2032 in her BAB237131-056 remote because it was reading low. The remote is a separate unit on these, part number 08191-00922, just handles lock and unlock and panic. Nothing to do with starting.
Her Echo fired right up, no two-second cutoff. She just sat there for a second, waiting for it to stall again. It did not.
