Over in River Park/Wagon Wheel, I got a call from a woman whose 2000 Echo remote had stopped unlocking the doors. The blade still worked fine in the ignition, the car started every time, but the fob buttons did nothing from any distance. She'd been opening it by hand with the key for about two weeks before she called.
I pulled the fob apart on the hood of the car. The CR2032 inside was original. I don't know how many years it had been in there, but it was reading almost flat. Swapped it out, tested the buttons, and got maybe ten feet of range. Better, but not right.
The contact pads on the circuit board had some oxidation on them. Cleaned those off, reseated everything, and tested again. Full range came back. Lock, unlock, and the third button all responding correctly.
She said she'd been assuming the remote was just old and broken and was ready to buy a whole new one. Didn't need to. The job took about fifteen minutes at her car in the parking area, and she saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted her for a replacement fob and programming.
The Echo remote is a simple, older system. Sometimes the fix is that simple too. But you have to open it up and actually check instead of just guessing.
