There's a shopping center near Conejo Oaks where I've now run into the same situation twice: someone who already got burned by a bait-and-switch locksmith before they found me.
This one started at an AutoZone in Thousand Oaks. A guy was standing in the parking lot with his 2003 Echo, fob in hand, looking at his phone. He'd called one of those ads that comes up at the top of Google Maps with a fake local address. They quoted him a low price on the phone, sent someone out, and the price tripled once the guy was standing next to the car. He ended up paying way more than he should have for a remote that half-worked. Lock button was responsive maybe one time in three. Unlock was worse. Engine start was fine because that runs through the key separately on this setup, but the remote was basically a coin on a keychain.
He found EZ Car Keyz through Google Guaranteed and called to ask a simple question first: how do I know you're real. Fair question. I gave him my BSIS license number, LCO#6792, which is California's Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Background check, insurance, registered business address, the whole paper trail. He looked it up on his phone while we talked.
When I got there, I opened the fob and the contact tabs were oxidized, which explained part of the problem. But the fob also needed to be reprogrammed. On a 2003 Echo the factory fob does have a relearn sequence that can be done without a scan tool if you're working with a key that's already coded to the car, but his situation called for proper equipment because the fob history was a mess after the previous guy poked at it. I used my programmer, ran through the sequence cleanly, and tested all three buttons from across the parking lot.
He didn't need a new fob. He needed someone who knew what they were doing the first time.
