A parent near the youth soccer fields by Grant Park in Ventura flagged me down while I was finishing another call. Her 2001 Echo had one working key left, the rubber on the remote was half gone, and she said she'd been pressing the lock button through a hole in her pocket for months. The remote was the 08191-00922 three-button unit with a CR2032 that looked original. Crusty white residue on the battery contacts.
I decoded the door lock, cut a new TOY43 blade, and matched it to the ignition. Then I connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port under the dash. The Echo's immobilizer module uses the 4C fixed-code transponder, so the process is a seed-read, password calculation, and key registration. No 16-minute security timer on this generation, which is nice.
Once the transponder took, I moved on to the remote. Paired it, then walked across the lot testing lock, unlock, and panic from different angles. Started the car three times back to back. She watched the whole thing from a camp chair, half paying attention, half watching the soccer game.
What got her was the range check. I was a good 30 feet out pressing buttons, and she said the old remote barely worked from five feet. A fresh CR2032 and clean contacts will do that. She did not need a dealer visit or a tow. Just the right fix, on site, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
