I was out in Poinsettia on a Tuesday morning for a woman who drives a 2001 Echo. She had both her keys, the car started fine, but the remote had been dead for a few weeks. She'd been manually locking and unlocking and finally got tired of it.
She figured it was the battery. She was half right. The CR2032 was worn down, but when I put a fresh one in, the range was still garbage. Maybe ten feet. Something was off inside the fob itself.

Then I did what I always do before I call it done. Walked to the other side of the street and tested lock and unlock from a real distance. Hit all three buttons. Had her start the car while I watched from outside to confirm the lock re-engaged cleanly. Three clean starts. Range checked from multiple angles.
She said she thought I'd just hand her the fob and leave. That testing lap across the street is the part that matters. Problems that show up at thirty feet don't show up at two.
The dealer would have wanted her to bring it in, probably quoted her a full replacement fob at a price that would have stung. This was a fob service call, done in her driveway, for a fraction of that.
