Got a call from a guy near Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks. He was at the library with a 2004 Echo that would crank, fire for about two seconds, then die. Classic immobilizer fuel cutoff. The THEFT indicator on the dash was staying solid instead of flashing and going out.
He told me another locksmith had already come out and cut a new key with the right TOY43 profile, charged him full price, and left. The key turned the ignition fine, but the engine would not stay running. That locksmith told him the transponder ID box on the steering column was bad and bailed.
The ID box was not bad. The previous tech had not finished the registration sequence. Toyota's first-gen immobilizer on these Echos uses a 4C transponder chip and requires a seed/key calculation through the OBD port with a timed write cycle. If you interrupt it or skip the confirmation step, the chip writes temporarily but never commits to the ECU's permanent memory. Next power cycle, the car rejects it.
I plugged my IM608 into the OBD port, cleared the half-written key data, and ran a clean registration from scratch. Full seed calculation, full timed cycle, permanent write confirmed on screen. His key with the HYQ12BAN remote started the car clean. THEFT light flashed on ignition, then went out the way it should.
I showed him the IM608 confirmation screen. That screen is the proof the job is done, not just attempted.
