1995 Toyota MR2 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman in the Birnam Wood neighborhood of Montecito called me about her 1995 MR2. She had one key left, worn smooth at the tips, and she was worried about being stranded.
Her husband had already called the dealer, who told them they would need to track down the original key code through Toyota's records and possibly order a blank that isn't sitting on any shelf anymore. Days, maybe a week. She figured that was the answer.
I drove out and met her in the driveway. The original key was worn but still readable under magnification. I decoded the cuts right there, cross-referenced the blank, and had it in the cutter in a few minutes. Cut the new key, tested it in the ignition, tested it in the door. Both cylinders turned clean.
The whole job took maybe 25 minutes. She held the new key and asked if that was really it. Just a metal key, cut to her car, done on site.
The dealer's process wasn't wrong exactly, just built for a system that doesn't need to exist here. Sometimes the job is simpler than the phone call made it sound.
