Got a call from a woman over near Simi Hills Golf Course in Simi Valley. Her 2003 MR2 Spyder wouldn't start. Key turned, engine cranked, but the immobilizer light on the dash just blinked and the car refused to fire.
She had one key. Just the one. The bow was cracked and she'd wrapped it in electrical tape months ago to keep it together. That tape was pressing on the 4C glass transponder vial inside the plastic head, and the chip had shifted just enough that the transponder amplifier coil around the ignition couldn't get a clean read.
I decoded her lock with my TOY43 Lishi right at the curb. Read every wafer, confirmed the cuts, and programmed a fresh 4C transponder key on site. The MR2 Spyder uses Toyota's older fixed-code system, so registration goes through the key master function on the ECU. Once the new key was in and the immobilizer accepted it, the dash light went solid and the engine caught on the first turn.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a tow plus a full replacement and said it would take three to five business days because they had to order the blank. She'd been borrowing her neighbor's truck for a week while she figured it out.
Whole thing took me about 25 minutes in her driveway. The car was fine. The key was the only problem.
