A guy near Rocky Peak Trail in Simi Valley had just picked up a 2002 MR2 Spyder off Craigslist. One key. The seller told him to get a spare on his own.
He tried the hardware store first. They cut the blade fine, but the car cranked and would not start. The security light on the dash just blinked at him. Hardware stores can duplicate the metal, but they cannot touch the 4C transponder chip inside the key head. Without that chip talking to the immobilizer ECU, the engine kills fuel injection after about two seconds of cranking.
He called a Toyota dealer. They quoted him a wait of several days just to get the blank in, plus the programming appointment. Then he called me.
I met him at his spot near the trailhead. Used my VVDI2 to read the transponder data from his original key and clone it onto a fresh 4C glass chip in a new key shell. Cut the TOY43 blade on my Condor, tested both keys back to back. Start, shut off, swap keys, start again. Both clean.
Whole thing took maybe twenty minutes. He went from one worn-out key to two working ones, and now if he ever loses one, the next job is a simple add-key instead of an all-keys-lost scenario. That difference alone saves a good chunk down the road.
