A guy in the Madera neighborhood picked up a 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder off Craigslist. Clean car, good deal, one key. The seller mentioned getting a spare cut "at any hardware store," handed it over, and that was that.
He went to a hardware store first. They cut a key from the original. It fit the door, fit the ignition, turned fine. Car cranked, ran for about two seconds, and stalled. He tried it a few more times, same thing every time. He called me wondering if the car had a fuel problem.
It didn't. The replacement key had no chip work done. The ignition cylinder accepted the cut, but the immobilizer didn't recognize the key and shut the engine down after the starter cycle. Classic symptom on these mid-2000s Toyotas.
I met him near his place in Madera. He had the original key with him, which made this clean. I read the transponder data off the original, cut a new blade to match on my machine, and got the chip registered so the immobilizer would accept it. Tested cold start, confirmed it ran past that two-second mark, handed it back.
He asked about the dealer. I told him what they typically want for this job. His reaction was pretty much what I expected.
He drove away with a working spare and a hardware-store key he can keep as a door-only backup if he ever needs it.
