Over near Rancho Tapo Community Park in Simi Valley, a woman had been fighting her 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder ignition for weeks. Some mornings it turned fine. Other mornings she sat in the parking lot at her yoga studio wiggling the key for five minutes before it caught.
The dealer told her she needed a full ignition cylinder replacement, new keys, and an immobilizer reprogram. That's their standard answer on these older Toyotas.
I checked the cylinder and the problem was worn wafers, not a dead lock. The TOY43 ignition on these MR2s uses small brass wafers that get sloppy over time, and once they shift, the key binds at weird angles. Before I touched anything mechanical, I used my ACDP to back up the immobilizer data from the transponder ID box (89780-17020). That way if anything went sideways during the wafer work, I had the 4C chip data saved and could recover.
Decoded the lock, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a fresh TOY43 key with a new 4C transponder matched to the existing immobilizer. The whole job happened in the parking lot.
She turned the key and just sat there for a second, like she was waiting for the usual fight. It slid in clean and fired right up. No binding, no wiggling.
The dealer wanted to replace parts that weren't broken. I replaced what was actually worn, on site, for a fraction of what they quoted.
