Got a call from a woman near McGrath State Beach in Oxnard. She had a 2005 MR2 Spyder, the third-gen mid-engine two-seater, and her only key had snapped right at the bow where the plastic meets the blade. Half the key was in her hand, the other half was stuck in the ignition cylinder.
She had already called the Toyota dealer. They told her it would need to be towed in, they would have to extract the broken blade, and then order a new key with the transponder. Timeline was three to five business days. She drives the car to work every day.
I got there during her lunch. Extracted the broken blade piece from the ignition with a hook pick in about forty seconds. The transponder chip in the broken key head was still intact, which matters because these W30 MR2s run the older Toyota fixed-code 4C immobilizer through the coil antenna around the ignition lock. I read the system with my IM608 through the OBD-II port, confirmed the immobilizer ECU was the 89780 series unit on the steering column, and cloned the 4C chip to a new TOY43 key blank.
Cut the key on site, tested the ignition, engine fired right up. She sat in the driver's seat and just held the new key for a second like she was making sure it was real.
Whole thing took about twenty minutes. She kept the car and went back to work.
