2001 Toyota MR2 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy near Corriganville Park in Simi Valley called me about his 2001 MR2 Spyder. He only had one key left and it was getting worn down to the point where he had to wiggle it to turn the ignition. He had already called the dealer and they told him to bring the car in with proof of ownership and wait a few days for the key to come in from their parts department.
He did not want to hand over his only working key and sit around waiting.
I pulled up to his place and used my TOY43 Lishi to decode the door lock directly. The MR2 Spyder runs a standard Toyota wafer lock, same TOY43 keyway as the Celica and Camry of that era. Read all the wafer positions, cut a fresh blade on the spot.
Then the transponder side. The 2001 MR2 uses the older Toyota immobilizer system with a 4C fixed-code chip. No token, no handshake like the later 4D or H chips. I seated the 4C glass transponder in the key bow, connected through the OBD-II port with my programmer, and registered the new key to his ECU. Whole thing took about 25 minutes.
He tested it three or four times in a row, locking and unlocking, starting and shutting off, like he was waiting for it to fail. It did not. He had a fresh spare and could finally stop babying that worn original.
