A guy in East Simi Valley called me about his 2001 MR2 Spyder. He had one key left and it was getting worn down at the blade. He wasn't locked out yet, but he'd watched the tip of the blade flex a little when he turned the ignition and decided not to wait for it to snap off inside the cylinder.
Smart call.
I pulled up to his apartment lot and started by decoding his door lock cylinder to get the cut. That's the clean way to do it when the original key is worn, because a worn key traces its own damage into a new cut if you just duplicate it. Reading the lock directly gives you the factory depth, not the worn depth. I cut the new blade to those specs.
Then the transponder side. The 2001 MR2 has an immobilizer, and the chip in the new key blank has to be registered to that specific car through the OBD port. No registration, no start. I ran the programming sequence, confirmed the new key was accepted by the system, and handed it to him.
He turned it over and started the car himself. That part matters to people. They want to be the one who turns the key the first time.
The whole job was done at his building in about 40 minutes. He mentioned the dealer quote he'd gotten a while back when he first thought about getting a spare, and just shook his head. Saved a good chunk, didn't move the car, didn't wait a week.
