1999 Toyota Solara Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over near High Street in Moorpark, a Solara owner flagged me down at a youth soccer tournament. Her 1999 coupe, the first-gen XV20 body, still looked clean. But the remote had quit months ago and she had been manually locking with the key ever since.
She handed me the dead remote. Cracked case, corroded CR2032 contacts, and the rubber button pad was worn paper-thin. Classic for a 26-year-old GQ43VT14T.
I started with the key side. Connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port under the dash and read the immobilizer module. The 1999 Solara uses Toyota's fixed-code 4C transponder system, no seed/password calculation like the later 4D and H-chip setups. Her existing mechanical key read clean, transponder responding, immobilizer happy. That side was fine.
The remote was the whole problem. I swapped in a new GQ43VT14T shell, fresh button pad, new CR2032, and transferred the board over. Then programmed it using the driver's door lock cylinder method that Toyota built into these early remotes. Insert key, lock-unlock five times within a specific count, door locks cycle to confirm programming mode, press lock on the remote, done.
Walked the parking lot testing range. Lock, unlock, trunk release, all three buttons from about 30 feet out at different angles. Three consecutive starts to confirm the immobilizer side stayed solid.
She stood there watching me pace around clicking buttons and said she forgot the car even had a trunk release on the remote.
The whole job was a fraction of what Toyota would have quoted after parts markup and shop time.
