2000 Toyota Solara
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you erase lost or stolen remotes from my 2000 Solara so they no longer work?

Yes. When we run the programming sequence on this generation of Toyota remote, the process overwrites what was previously stored. Old remotes that were registered to the car stop working once the new programming cycle is complete. So if your fob was lost or stolen, the replacement process handles that automatically. You walk away knowing the old one is dead.

Q: Does the 2000 Solara fob have an emergency blade hidden inside it?

No. The 2000 Solara setup is a traditional separate key and fob arrangement. Your ignition key is a standalone metal key, and the remote is its own separate unit. There is no blade folded inside the fob. If your fob battery dies, you lose remote lock and unlock, but your physical key still gets you in the door and starts the car as usual. The two pieces work independently.

Q: My 2000 Solara remote works sometimes and not others. Is the fob going bad or is something else wrong?

Intermittent range on these older Toyota remotes is usually one of three things. First, the CR2032 is weak even if it tested okay, because remote function can degrade before the battery reads fully dead. Swap it fresh and see if the behavior changes. Second, the contact points inside the fob can oxidize over time on a 20-plus year old unit. Opening the fob and cleaning the board contacts with a dry cloth sometimes brings one back.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2000 Solara. Can I program it myself or do I need a locksmith?

The 2000 Solara remote does have an onboard self-programming sequence you can attempt. You need at least one working key to the car to run it. The sequence is timing-dependent, and if you break the steps or go too slow between them, the system exits program mode and the new fob does not register. A lot of owners on forums report getting it on the second or third try once they read the exact timing right.

2000 Toyota Solara Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Near The Oaks Mall Area in Thousand Oaks, I got a call from a woman who had already tried everything she found on a forum thread. Her 2000 Solara remote had stopped locking and unlocking the doors. She had swapped the CR2032 twice. Still nothing. She figured the fob was dead and wanted a replacement.

When I got there, I asked her to walk me through what happened right before it quit. She mentioned she had tried the self-programming sequence she found online, got confused partway through, and stopped in the middle of it. That was the problem. She had accidentally entered programming mode and then exited without completing it, which wiped her existing fob from the system.

The fob itself was fine. The battery she put in was fine. The car had just forgotten the remote because the sequence got interrupted. I ran the programming cycle correctly, registered her original fob back to the vehicle, and tested all three buttons at the car.

She had spent two weeks thinking she needed a whole new fob. She did not. Getting this right just takes knowing exactly what the car is listening for and not breaking the sequence mid-step.

Toyota Solara Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on a 2000 Solara?▼

A mobile locksmith coming to your location is going to be a fraction of the dealer route. Toyota dealers typically treat an all-keys-lost job as a significant service appointment, and you may be looking at a wait before they can even schedule it, plus potential tow costs if the car does not start. For a 2000 Solara, the job involves cutting a new key to the vehicle and enrolling the transponder chip so the immobilizer accepts it.
