Out near Rancho Conejo, a guy flagged me down in the library parking lot in Thousand Oaks. He was frustrated before I even got out of my van.

He had already paid another locksmith to program a replacement key for his 2002 Solara. The cut was fine. The remote was fine. But every time he tried to drive away, the engine would crank, fire up, and then die about two seconds later. He went back to the locksmith. The locksmith told him the immobilizer module itself was bad and walked away from the job. Charged him for it too.

I asked him to pop the hood and let me look at the VIN plate first. J-prefix. Japanese assembly. That matters with these because the immobilizer sequence has a timing component that some tools handle differently depending on build origin, and if the previous locksmith ran a generic Toyota procedure without accounting for that, the registration could have written temporarily without committing to permanent memory. The engine fires because something is there, but the module rejects it a couple of seconds later. Starts then stalls. Classic incomplete registration.

I connected through the OBD port, cleared the failed key registration, and ran the full sequence cleanly, respecting the seed-and-key handshake and the timed enrollment window. Watched the confirmation screen until it showed a permanent write, not a pending one. Then I started the car. It idled. Stayed running. He sat in the driver seat for a few seconds like he was waiting for it to die again.

It did not die.

He asked me how much the dealer would have charged. I told him to call me next time instead and skip that question.
