A guy near Conejo Community Park in Thousand Oaks flagged me down at the library parking lot. He had a 2002 Solara that cranked fine but killed fuel after two seconds, every single time. Classic immobilizer rejection. He told me another locksmith had already come out, charged him full price for a new key, and left saying the transponder ID box was bad.

The ID box was not bad.

What happened was the first locksmith skipped steps in Toyota's registration sequence. On these first-gen immobilizer Solaras, the ECU requires a seed/key security calculation and a timed write cycle. If you rush the timer or interrupt the process, the transponder ID writes temporarily but never commits to permanent memory in the ECU. So the car starts once, maybe twice, then rejects the key like it was never programmed.

I used my TOY43 Lishi to verify the blade cut was good. It was. Then I connected through the OBD-II port with my IM608, cleared the half-written registration, ran a clean immobilizer reset with the full security handshake, and let the timed cycle finish. His key, the GQ43VT14T remote head with the 4C transponder, started the engine clean. No fuel cutoff.

I showed him the IM608 screen confirming the key was permanently stored. That screen is the proof the job is done, not just attempted. He had already paid someone else for work that was never finished. All I could do was get it right this time for a fraction of what he had spent total.
