My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the extraction tools to pull the broken piece from the cylinder without damaging it. Once it is out, I can decode the cut from the extracted piece, cut a new key, and program the transponder chip on site.

One thing worth knowing about the 2004 Solara specifically: the key shell on these is plastic-collared at the head, and owners on forums have reported the head cracking or separating from years of use. If the blade snapped inside the cylinder, it usually means the key was already fatigued. A fresh cut on a proper replacement blank solves that.

What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 2004 Solara need one?

A transponder key has two jobs at once. The blade turns the ignition cylinder mechanically, same as any metal key. But inside the plastic head there is a small chip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer when you turn the key. If the immobilizer does not get the right signal from that chip, the engine either will not crank or it cranks and immediately cuts out.

The 2004 Solara has no remote, no buttons, no fob battery. It is purely a turn-key ignition system. That also means there is no fob to replace separately. The whole unit is the key itself. If the blade is damaged but the head is intact, I can sometimes transplant the chip into a new shell. If it is a total loss, I cut and program a complete replacement on site.

My Solara cranks but immediately stalls. Could it be the key?

That exact symptom, cranks fine then dies within a second or two, is the classic sign that the immobilizer is not recognizing the transponder chip. It is different from a no-crank or a dead battery situation, which is why it trips people up.

A few things cause it. A worn or cracked key head can damage the chip inside even when the blade looks fine. A key that was cut at a hardware store without chip programming will do the same thing every time. And occasionally the chip itself fails from age or heat exposure after sitting in a hot car for years.

If your Solara is doing the crank-and-stall, do not keep cranking it repeatedly. It is not going to clear on its own. Call me and I will diagnose whether it is the key, the antenna ring around the ignition, or something further in the system.

Can I get a spare key made for my 2004 Solara before I lose the one I have?

Depends on the blank. The 2004 Solara takes a specific transponder chip type, and not every aftermarket blank on the market carries the right one. Some blanks sold online list a wide range of compatible vehicles but do not actually carry a chip that works with Toyota's immobilizer system from this era.

If you bring me the blank you bought, I can check it before I cut anything. If it is compatible, I program it. If it is not, I tell you right there rather than after wasting a cut. Either way, you are not driving blind on a guess.
