A grad student called me from his apartment lot near Santa Barbara Harbor on a Tuesday morning. He had a 1998 Beetle with one working flip key and wanted a spare before the original died on him. He'd already called the VW dealer. They told him to bring the car in, leave it for the day, and wait for a key to be ordered by VIN. I pulled up before 8 AM. His Beetle uses the HU66 keyway with the ID48 megamos crypto chip inside the remote flip shell, part number 1J0 959 753F. I decoded his driver door lock with my HU66 Lishi tool right at the car, reading each wafer position so the cut would match without pulling the lock apart.
He watched the whole thing from about two feet away. When I got to the decode readout he leaned in like it was a puzzle, asking which numbers were the bitting. I walked him through it.
Programmed the new key through the OBD-II port. The Immo2 system on these is cooperative if you have pin code access and the right software. Total time was about 25 minutes, key in hand, tested on all four remote buttons plus the start.
He made his first class. I packed up and headed to the next call.
