Got a call from a preschool aide near River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard. She had walked out to her 2019 Beetle in the lot, key in hand, and the car would not respond. Twist the ignition, nothing. Dashboard lit up with the immobilizer warning light, that little car-with-a-key icon sitting there solid. Parents were already pulling in for drop-off.
I made it out in about 30 minutes. Popped my Autel IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash and pulled the immobilizer data from the instrument cluster, which on these Beetles runs through the NEC+24C64 board inside the cluster module. The 2019 uses Immo5 with Megamos AES, so the tool had to go through VW's online server handshake to pull the security PIN and generate a new transponder value.
While that processed, I cut the new mechanical key blade to code. HU162T profile, the one with the internal milling VW started using on these later models. Took a couple of minutes on the Condor.
Once the server kicked back the authorization, I wrote the new key, dropped it into the ignition, and it fired right up. Tested the remote lock, unlock, and trunk buttons from a few angles in the parking lot.
She walked back inside about 15 minutes late instead of calling out for the day. The whole job ran maybe 40 minutes, start to finish, right there in the lot.
