A visiting professor staying at a rental in the Wagon Wheel neighborhood in Oxnard called me late one evening. She was in town for the semester, had one key for her 2001 Beetle, and it stopped working. Flip blade was intact, battery was fine, but the immobilizer light on the cluster just blinked and the engine would crank without catching.

I drove out that same night. Plugged into the OBD port, pulled the immobilizer data off the instrument cluster, which on these is the Immo3 module built into the gauge cluster itself. Her original ID48 chip had lost its learned value. I cut a new HU66 blade on my machine, seated a fresh Megamos 48 chip in the 1J0959753F housing, and programmed the transponder through the diagnostic port. About 30 minutes start to finish.
She turned the key, the immobilizer light went solid and then off, and the engine caught on the first crank. She just sat there for a second watching the dash, like she was waiting for something to go wrong again.
She drove to the university the next morning with two working keys.
