Got a call from a guy near the Woolworths Building downtown in Oxnard. He had a 2014 Volkswagen Beetle with one working flip key, and the remote buttons on it had stopped responding months ago. He'd been manually locking the car and just living with it. Then the blade on that key snapped at the pivot pin, and now he had nothing functional at all.
He called the VW dealer first. They told him they'd need to order the key shell by VIN, quoted him a wait of over two weeks, and said he'd have to get the car towed in for programming. During planting season on his small organic farm outside town, pulling his only vehicle wasn't happening.
I drove out to him. Worked on the Beetle right next to his property. The immobilizer on these is cluster-based, so I connected through OBD, pulled the component security bytes and PIN from the instrument cluster using my VVDI2, precoded a fresh ID48 chip, and programmed it to the car. Cut the HU66 blade on site, synced the NBG010180T remote, tested all four buttons and the transponder start.
He watched the whole thing from about two feet away, arms crossed, standing between the Beetle and a tractor. When it fired up on the new key, he just nodded slowly, like he was sizing up whether it would hold. It held.
Two working keys before I left. The dealer route would have been a long tow plus weeks of waiting. For him, mobile was the only option that made sense.
