Out in El Rio, over near the residential stretch off Vineyard Avenue, I got a call from a guy who had parked his 2012 Beetle in his driveway and walked inside. About twenty minutes later his neighbor knocked on the door to tell him his car was running. He came out, turned it off, and when he tried to lock it with the fob, nothing happened. He tried again. Then he put the key in and turned it. Car started. But the fob was dead. Not weak, not intermittent. Dead.
He had replaced the CR2032 himself two weeks earlier, bought a two-pack from a pharmacy. I asked him to hand me the key before I touched anything else. The blade was fine, mechanically intact. But when I popped the fob open, the replacement battery was a CR2016. Same diameter, half the thickness. It looked right sitting in the tray, made contact, gave him just enough voltage to start the car for a couple of weeks, and then gave up entirely.
I seated a proper CR2032, confirmed the contacts were clean, and the fob came back without any reprogramming at all. Lock, unlock, all four buttons, everything working before I even reached for my OBD cable.
He was a little embarrassed. I told him it happens more than he would think. Battery packaging at pharmacies groups sizes together and the CR2016 and CR2032 share the same shelf more often than they should. We tested the fob range across the driveway and it was solid. Job closed in under fifteen minutes.
He mentioned he had almost called the dealer. I did not press on that.
