An independent mechanic in Downtown Oxnard had been wrestling with his own 2004 Volkswagen Beetle for weeks. Funny thing about mechanics: they can rebuild transmissions in their sleep, but ignition wafer work is a locksmith's world.
His HU66 cylinder was worn out. Key would catch halfway through the turn, sometimes refuse to come back out. He had been jiggling it, pulling the steering wheel around, doing all the workarounds. The dealer wanted to sell him a full cylinder replacement, new key, and immobilizer reprogramming. He was about to book it, then stopped and thought about it.
I drove out and looked at the ignition. The cylinder housing was fine. The wafers inside were the problem, which is what happens after years of use, especially with a heavy keychain hanging off the key. I pulled the ACDP and read the Immo3 cluster data as a backup before I touched anything mechanical. Then I decoded the lock, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a fresh HU66 blade matched to the repaired cylinder.
His flip remote, the NBG735868T with the Megamos 48 chip, paired right back up. I pulled the old wafers out and showed him the wear. Flat spots, rounded edges, the kind of thing you can see with your eyes once you know what to look for.
Even a guy who fixes cars for a living called a locksmith for this one. Ignition internals are a different skill set.
