Keys come pre-cut from a small number of parts distribution points, ordered by VIN, shipped to the dealer, then programmed using the factory diagnostic system. The programming itself is fast, 30 minutes to an hour once the key is physically there. It's the wait for the key to arrive that runs you into days or weeks.

On top of that, dealers bill the diagnostic session and key code retrieval as labor, usually at shop rate for at least an hour. I skip all of that. I cut on site, program on site, and the only wait is driving to wherever you are in Oxnard.

I bought a replacement flip key fob online for my 2013 Beetle. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2013 Beetle does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the transponder side of the flip key. Adding a new key to the immobilizer requires diagnostic equipment that communicates with the vehicle's security system through the OBD port. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button combination that does it on this generation.

The blade still has to be cut to your specific vehicle as well. A key you bought online is a blank until both of those steps are done. If you already have the fob in hand, that's fine, bring it along. I can cut the blade and handle the programming in one visit. You won't pay twice.

The remote buttons on my 2013 Beetle flip key stopped working, but the car still starts. Do I need a whole new key?

Start with the CR2032. That battery powers the remote side only. The transponder that talks to the immobilizer draws power from the ignition circuit, not the fob battery, which is why the car keeps starting even when the remote goes dead. Swap the CR2032, make sure the contacts inside the battery slot are clean and making solid contact, and test all four buttons. If the range comes back, you're done. If it's still weak or dead after a fresh battery, the issue is either the circuit board inside the fob or the key needs to be re-paired to the vehicle's receiver. That's a much less common fix, but it does happen on keys that have taken a hard drop or gotten wet.
