Down at Fisherman's Wharf at the Harbor in Oxnard, a guy flagged me on a Tuesday night. He had just landed after a late flight, walked out to the economy lot, and his 2016 Volkswagen Beetle did nothing when he hit the fob. No chirp, no flash, no unlock. He is a documentary filmmaker and had a shoot starting across town in about four hours.
He had never used the emergency blade hidden inside the flip key housing. Didn't even know it was there.

I got there in under an hour. Pulled the emergency blade from the NBG010180T housing, popped the driver door through the hidden slot under the handle cap, and got him inside. Connected my IM608 through OBD to check key learn status on the BCM. His key was still registered. The dead CR2032 had just killed the remote signal and the push-to-start proximity wake-up. New battery in, ran a communication fault clear, tested all four buttons and the proximity start.
I tossed a spare CR2032 in his camera bag so he would have a backup on the road. He made his shoot on time, for a fraction of what the dealer route plus a tow would have cost.
