I was parked near the farmer's market in Downtown Oxnard when she called. A woman who taught art at a local middle school, standing next to her 2003 Volkswagen Beetle in a parking lot, holding a fob that had stopped doing anything useful. The remote functions were dead. The key still turned the ignition, so she could drive, but locking and unlocking from a distance was gone, and she wanted a working spare made before things got worse.

The case had a stress crack near the hinge where the blade folds out, the kind that happens when you drop the key on a hard surface at the wrong angle. The battery was still putting out voltage, but the contact inside was slightly sprung from the crack flexing the housing. That was killing the remote signal, not a deeper system problem.
I cut a new blade to her vehicle, transferred what needed to transfer, paired the replacement fob, and walked every button. Lock, unlock, and the other two buttons all responded cleanly. Then I had her test it herself before I packed up, because I'd rather she find a problem in the parking lot than call me later from her driveway.
The dealer was mentioned once, as an afterthought, when she said what they quoted. I didn't argue with the number. The work was done, the spare was in her hand, and she made it to her next errand.
