1996 Volvo S40 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a woman down at Ventura Harbor Village who locked herself out of her S40 while grabbing lunch near the pier. The key she had still turned the ignition, but the car would crank and die after about two seconds every time. Classic immobilizer rejection.
I pulled up and checked the key first. The blade was original Volvo NE66 profile, worn but functional. The problem was the transponder. The Megamos ID13 chip inside the plastic bow had cracked, probably from years of sharing a keyring with a pile of other keys. The immobilizer ECU in the S40 sends a signal, the chip is supposed to respond with its fixed code, and if the code comes back wrong or not at all, the car kills fuel injection almost immediately.
Cut a new NE66 blade by decoding her door lock right there in the parking lot. Seated a fresh ID13 transponder in the new key head, then used my programmer to write the correct fixed code so the immobilizer would recognize it. Three clean starts, let it idle each time, turned it off, restarted. No crank-and-die.
She said she had been sitting there for over an hour trying it over and over, thinking the battery was going dead. It never was the battery. The car was doing exactly what Volvo designed it to do: refuse to run without the right transponder response.
Whole thing took less than an hour, right in the harbor parking lot, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted her over the phone.
