2001 Volvo S40
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2001 Volvo S40 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy up in Upper Ojai, off one of those long winding roads where towing is its own adventure. He had a 2001 Volvo S40 sitting in his driveway and one key, which he'd just snapped.

The blade broke off right in the door lock. He got the car open eventually with a spare, but the broken piece was stuck, and now he was down to one working key that he didn't fully trust.

He wasn't in a panic, but he was cautious. He'd already called the Volvo dealer in the area and heard numbers that made him go quiet on the phone. He found me after that.

I told him to pull up his VIN before I arrived. It's on the lower driver's side of the windshield, also on his registration. With that I already knew what I was dealing with: the transponder key setup on the first-generation S40, what blade the car takes, and what tools I needed to bring. I loaded up and headed out.

When I got there, I extracted the broken blade from the door lock first, which took a few minutes of careful work. Then I cut a new key blade to match his vehicle and programmed the transponder chip to the immobilizer on site. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Started clean.

He asked what the dealer had quoted. I told him what I charge and left the comparison where it belonged: as an afterthought. He drove me back down the hill to my van and said he wished he'd called first.

Upper Ojai is the kind of place where being stranded without a key means you're really stranded. I'd rather you have my number before that happens.
