Got a call from a guy along the Ojai Trolley route one evening. His only key for his 2001 S40 was gone. Checked every pocket, the whole car, retraced his steps twice. Nothing. He was about to call a tow just to get the Volvo somewhere safe overnight.

No VIDA session needed on these, no per-vehicle software order, no server handshake. The first-gen security is a different animal from the later CEM-based S40s.
He got quiet once the engine turned over. Just sat there for a second with his hands on the wheel. Then he said something like, "I thought I was sleeping in this car tonight."
He drove home. The dealer was closed anyway, and they would have wanted a tow plus a wait measured in days, not minutes.
