Dealers also mark up the key blank itself, charge a full labor hour minimum, and sometimes want to inspect the car before they'll even start. That adds up fast. A mobile locksmith who already has the right tool and the right blank loaded before arriving is a different situation entirely. You get the same programmed, tested key without the shop overhead.

What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 2001 S40 need one?

First thing to check is the physical condition of the key head. Any cracks near the chip area are a red flag. If you have a second key, try it and see if the pattern changes. If one key starts the car reliably and the other doesn't, the chip in the problem key is likely failing.

If both keys are doing it, the antenna ring is worth looking at. That's a different repair. Either way, I can test on site and tell you what you're dealing with before anything gets replaced.
