1998 Volvo S40
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

1998 Volvo S40 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked at Surfers Point on a Tuesday, watching a couple of guys wax their boards before sunrise, when my phone buzzed with a job a few blocks away.

The owner of a 1998 Volvo S40 had been dealing with an intermittent no-start for about two weeks. Some mornings it fired right up. Other mornings, nothing. No crank, just the dash doing its thing. He had already bought a replacement key online, had it cut at a hardware store, and it did exactly what his original key was doing. That told me something right there.

I pulled up, and the first thing I did was look at the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. On a car this age, that ring can loosen or develop a hairline crack in the housing. It sits right at the ignition collar and it takes a beating every single time the key goes in. This one had shifted slightly and was making inconsistent contact. The key and the chip inside it were fine. The ring wasn't reading reliably.

We got it sorted on site. His original key programmed correctly, the replacement he bought online got enrolled as a spare, and I watched him start it four times in a row before I packed up my gear.

He mentioned he had called the dealer earlier that week. They wanted to schedule him out several days and the estimate they gave him was not a small number. He said getting it handled in the parking lot near the beach, same morning he called, felt almost too easy.
