I got a call from a guy over near The Avenue in Ventura. He'd already paid someone else to make a key for his 1999 Volvo S40, and the car still wouldn't start. It would crank, fire for half a second, then die. Every single time.
He told me the first locksmith blamed the central electronics module and walked away. Charged him for the attempt, said the module was probably gone, suggested he call the dealer.
I asked him one question before I drove out: did that locksmith pull the module or just plug into the OBD port? He didn't know. I had a pretty good idea already.
When I got there, I verified the blade cut first. It was reading correctly against the lock, so that wasn't the problem. Then I pulled the central electronics module from under the dash and put it on the bench with my programmer. Read the secured memory, pulled the key data out of the dump, generated what I needed, wrote it back clean, and reinstalled the module. Finished the enrollment sequence through the OBD port.
First key turn: started and stayed running. I did it two more times just to be sure.
The previous locksmith had tried to skip the bench step entirely. Without reading that module's memory first, the key registration never completes. The module doesn't accept new key data through OBD alone on this generation. That's just how the system works.
He already had money out the door from the first attempt. What I charged him was a fraction of what the dealer wanted for the same job, and the dealer would have had him tow it in and wait on a key to ship.
