Up near Meditation Mount in Ojai, a guy with a 2007 S40 had zero keys and a car that would not move. He had been up there with his family for the afternoon and somewhere between the walk and the parking area, his only fob vanished. No spare at home. No spare anywhere.

I drove out with my ACDP bench setup and pulled the CEM from the dash. On these P1 Volvos the CEM is the gatekeeper. It stores the encrypted key data in its EEPROM, and without reading that data on the bench first, you cannot generate a new key. Period.
I backed up the full EEPROM before touching anything. That part is not optional. One bad write to the CEM and the car becomes a brick. Read it, verified the dump, generated the new KR55WK49250 five-button remote head key from the secured data, wrote the CEM back, and finished pairing through OBD.
His S40 started on the first turn in that gravel lot overlooking the valley. He just stood there watching the dash cycle through like he did not trust it yet.
