In the Matilija area of Ojai, a woman called me about her 2004 S40. She had bought it used, one key, always meant to get a spare cut. Years passed. Then the fob housing cracked along the seam, and when she tried to use the key blade manually for the first time, it snapped off inside the door lock.
She was standing in a parking lot holding the fob shell in one hand with nothing to show for it.
When I got there, the blade fragment was still seated in the lock cylinder. I extracted it, decoded the lock, and cut a fresh blade from the decode. Then I opened the cracked fob shell and checked the transponder chip inside. Still intact. That mattered a lot. When you still have the old key, even a destroyed one, the chip inside is usually fine because it has no moving parts and sits protected in the plastic head. I transferred it into a new shell, verified the remote functions, and confirmed the vehicle started.
She went from zero working keys to two in about 45 minutes. I showed her both before I left, tested locks and ignition on each one.
The dealer had given her a quote that made her laugh nervously. She called me instead.
