Over near Rincon Beach Park in Carpinteria, an S40 owner had the classic one-key situation. Bought the car used a few years back with a single fob, always meant to get a spare, never did.
The housing on her KR55WK49250 had cracked along the seam where the two halves snap together. She'd been holding it together with tape for months. Then the emergency blade snapped off inside the driver door lock when she tried manual entry after the CR2450 died. Fob housing in one hand, blade stuck in the cylinder. Zero working keys.
I pulled the broken blade fragment out of the lock, then opened the cracked fob on the hood. The board and the ID48 chip were still intact inside the busted shell. That matters a lot on these P1 Volvos because if the chip is good, I can read transponder data with the VVDI2 and skip a full CEM bench procedure. Pulling the CEM from behind the glove box, reading it on the bench, and writing new key data takes real time. Skipping that step cut the job roughly in half.
I decoded the lock, cut two fresh blades, and rebuilt her original fob into a new shell with the salvaged board and chip. Second key got a fresh chip programmed through the OBD port.
She watched the whole thing from about three feet away. When both keys started the car clean, she just nodded like she'd been holding her breath for a while. Whole job, about 45 minutes. Way less than what the Volvo dealer quoted her over the phone.
