She was at her place near Rincon Point in Carpinteria, and the whole situation had been building for a while. Bought the S40 used, got one fob, always meant to make a spare. Years went by. Then the housing cracked along the seam and she tried the emergency blade for the first time in probably three years.
It snapped off in the door lock.

I pulled the fragment out of the lock first, then decoded the cylinder. The board inside the cracked housing was still intact, which is more common than people think on these. I transferred it into a new shell, cut two blades, and ran the programming on both. Tested every button, both lock cylinders, ignition.
Forty-five minutes, start to finish. She had two working keys instead of one broken one.
The dealer was going to be a multi-day situation with a tow. That part almost didn't need saying.
