2005 Chevrolet Colorado
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know I'm not calling a scam locksmith?

Three things to check before anyone rolls up. First, get a firm price on the phone specific to your year and model, not a vague starting-at number. Second, ask for the company name and a license number you can verify with the California BSIS database online. Third, if they quote one price on the phone and a different price once they're standing next to your truck, that's your answer. We quote firm on the phone for the 2005 Colorado.

Q: Will the replacement fob work exactly like my original?

Yes. Once it's programmed to your truck, it behaves identically to the factory remote. We test every button before we leave. On a 3-button fob for this Colorado, that means lock, unlock, and panic all get verified on-site. If something is off, we deal with it right there. You're not calling back a day later wondering why the unlock range is cut in half.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or do I need to buy one from you?

If the fob you bought carries the correct factory FCC ID for the 2005 Colorado and is a new or known-good unit, there's a real chance we can program it. Bring it when you call me and read me the ID off the back label. The risk with buying online is that some fobs are listed as compatible but aren't, and some are used units that were previously registered to another vehicle, which can complicate things.

Q: My Colorado starts fine but the fob suddenly stopped working completely. What happened?

A few common causes on these. Dead or failing CR2032 is the first thing to rule out even if it seems recent. After that, cracked circuit board inside the fob housing is very common on older GM remotes that have been on a keychain for years. A crack can cause total loss of all buttons at once or kill just one or two.

2005 Chevrolet Colorado Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in Buena Creek, Vista. His 2005 Colorado fob had been acting up for a few weeks. Lock button worked, unlock was hit or miss, panic did nothing. He'd already swapped the CR2032 himself and figured that was the end of it. Wasn't.

He'd bought a replacement fob online. That's where things stalled. The fob just sat on his dashboard for two weeks because nobody told him it needed to be programmed to the truck. He called me after the third YouTube video told him three different things.

I pulled up to his place on a Tuesday. Looked at the original fob first. The board had a small crack along one edge, classic from a keychain drop, and one contact pad was oxidized. The replacement fob he ordered had the correct factory ID on the label, so that part he got right.

I connected my programmer to the OBD port, ran the remote programming sequence, and had both fobs registered to the truck inside twenty minutes. Walked him through testing every button on both remotes before I packed up.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him parts, programming, and a shop fee that added up to more than he wanted to spend, plus they wanted the truck dropped off. He had work in the morning. That wasn't happening.

Tuesday call, Tuesday done. He kept the original fob as a spare once I showed him it was still mechanically usable for the ignition.

Are you licensed and insured to work on Chevrolet vehicles in Vista?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, the state agency that regulates automotive locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance. When someone is programming a remote to your vehicle's security system and cutting a key that starts your truck, you want to know the person in your driveway passed a background check and is accountable to a state license board. Ask any locksmith for their BSIS license number before they start.
