2018 Chevrolet Colorado
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know I am not dealing with a scam locksmith?

Ask three things before anyone shows up: a California BSIS license number, the company name that will appear on the invoice, and a firm price for your specific vehicle and job. Scam operations quote one number on the phone and invent fees once they are in your driveway.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like my original?

Yes. The replacement key gets the blade cut to your vehicle and the transponder chip enrolled to your specific immobilizer. Before I leave, I test the key in the ignition, confirm the engine starts and stays running, and verify there are no security warning lights on the dash. A key that starts the engine once and stalls, or one that works intermittently, means the enrollment did not complete cleanly.

Q: My 2018 Colorado starts and immediately stalls when I use a replacement key I had cut somewhere else. What is happening?

That is the immobilizer doing its job. The engine management system checks for a valid transponder signal during startup. If the chip is not enrolled, or the copy was made from a transponder-unaware machine, the vehicle will crank and fire briefly, then kill the fuel and cut out. The blade being cut correctly has nothing to do with it. The transponder side has to be programmed separately with the right equipment.

Q: I only have one key left for my Colorado. Is it worth getting a spare made before it fails completely?

Strongly worth it. Single-key situations on a transponder vehicle are the scenario I see go bad the most. When that one key fails or gets lost, you are into an all-keys-lost procedure, which takes more time and costs more than a simple add-a-key done while you still have a working key in hand. Getting a spare made now, while the original is working, is the faster and less expensive version of this job by a clear margin.

2018 Chevrolet Colorado Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in The Bridges area of Rancho Santa Fe when a Colorado owner flagged me down in the lot near the club. Not literally flagged me down. She had already called and given me her VIN before I left my previous job, which is exactly how this goes when things move fast.

She had one working key left. It had been her only key for about eight months, which is a situation I hear constantly. One key, no spare, and the day it fails you are fully stuck. She wanted a spare cut and programmed before her luck ran out.

Because she had the VIN ready and one working key in hand, I already had the right blank prepped in the van. I verified the key and the vehicle matched up, got the transponder enrolled, and cut the blade to the vehicle. Tested both keys back to back in the ignition, confirmed the engine came up clean on both, and handed them over.

Total time was well under half an hour. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get an appointment, then parts on order after that. She said she paid a fraction of what they wanted and did not lose a single morning to a waiting room. That part was almost an afterthought by the time I was packing up, which is how it should be.

Are you licensed and insured to work on Chevrolet vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, which is the state body that regulates automotive locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance. For a vehicle like the 2018 Colorado, where the transponder has to be enrolled into the immobilizer to allow the engine to run, you want someone credentialed handling that process.
