She had just left urgent care with her kid and a bag of prescriptions. The 2020 Colorado sat in the parking lot and would not start. Key in, crank, nothing. It was close to 7pm and the pharmacy she needed closed at 9.
She tried the dealer first. Closed. Then she called me, and I was about 20 minutes out from Downtown Santee.
When I got there she was standing outside with the kid on her hip. I got into the truck, turned the key, and watched the dash. The engine would catch for a second and immediately stall. That pattern told me what I needed to know before I even pulled out a tool: the key was turning the ignition but the immobilizer was not seeing a valid chip signal. Not a dead battery in a fob. Not a mechanical issue. A chip enrollment problem.
I plugged into the OBD port and confirmed the existing key was no longer properly enrolled. Somewhere along the way it had lost its pairing, possibly from the key being near a strong magnetic field, possibly just from wear. I programmed a new key to the truck, verified the immobilizer was accepting it cleanly, and had her do the start herself so she could feel it was solid.
Then I walked her through what to watch for if it ever acts up again: the engine-starts-and-stalls pattern is the tell. Not a no-crank, not a dead battery. It cranks and dies.
From her phone call to a running engine was just under an hour. She made the pharmacy with time to spare. The dealer would have been the next morning at the earliest. Sometimes that gap matters a lot.
