2002 Chevrolet Tahoe
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2002 Chevrolet Tahoe Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out near the Spring Valley border, over in Lemon Grove, from a guy who had been driving his 2002 Tahoe with the same worn-down key since he bought it used three years back. He figured it was fine until it wasn't.

One morning it just would not turn the ignition. Not a dead battery, not a seized steering column lock, just a key so worn it could no longer reliably move the tumblers.

He had already called one place that told him they needed to order a part and come back the next day. He called me next.

I decoded the lock cylinder right there in his driveway. On a truck this age, the lock itself sometimes tells you more than a key code database would anyway, because previous owners, previous keys, and previous lockouts all leave their mark. I cut a replacement key to match what the cylinder actually needed, tested it in the ignition and both doors, and made sure the steering column lock was releasing cleanly before I called it done.

The whole thing took less time than his first phone call to the other shop. He mentioned the dealer had told him the truck was too old to service for keys. I did not say anything about that. The key worked, and that was the point.
