I was out in Ramona Country Estates on a Tuesday afternoon when a call came in about a 2013 Tahoe. The owner had one key left, and it had been through something. He was not sure if it fell off a workbench or got stepped on, but the key blade was bent slightly and the plastic head was cracked along one side. It still started the car. Barely.

He had been nursing it for a couple weeks, afraid to push his luck. Smart move. A cracked transponder head can still read fine until the chip shifts inside, and then it reads nothing at all. By the time most people call, they have already been stranded once.

I pulled up to his driveway, checked his surviving key first, confirmed the transponder was still talking to the system, and cut him a new blade from a fresh key blank. Then I programmed it through the OBD port so the immobilizer recognized the new chip. Once that was confirmed solid, I added the original damaged key back as well so he would have two working keys instead of one fragile one.

He mentioned he had called the dealer earlier in the week just to get a ballpark. They told him to bring it in, said they would need to order the blank, and that it could be a couple of days before he had anything in hand. He was looking at lost work time and a tow if the key gave out completely before his appointment.

We wrapped up in his driveway in under an hour. Two working keys, no trip, no wait. He held both of them up and just nodded. That was enough.
