A woman in the Richland area of San Marcos had already paid another locksmith to replace her 2017 Tahoe's smart key. It seemed fine at first. Started right up that morning, locked and unlocked normally. She figured she was done.
About a week later, a warning came up on the dash pointing to the vehicle security system. The engine would crank, catch for a second, then cut out. By the time she called me she thought it was an electrical gremlin, maybe a BCM issue, something expensive.
It wasn't. It was the key.
The previous locksmith had used a transponder chip that was close but not the right generation for this vehicle's immobilizer. What happens with a near-miss chip on these GM systems is subtle and maddening: the initial learn sequence accepts it because the surface handshake passes. But the immobilizer runs deeper verification over subsequent start cycles, and eventually it rejects the credential. The car doesn't just refuse to start once. It starts fine, then starts dying, then stops cooperating entirely. Owners chase electrical gremlins for weeks before someone figures out the key was wrong from day one.
I read the chip in the existing fob on site. Confirmed it was the wrong generation. Cut and programmed a new key with the correct transponder matched to her vehicle. While I had it open, I also swapped the CR2032 battery, which was reading low, because I wasn't going to hand her back a fixed key with a weak battery already in it.
She drove away that afternoon. The security warning was gone. The dealer had been mentioned at some point in the conversation, but only as the thing she was trying to avoid. She'd already paid once for a key that didn't work. Paying a third time, to a dealer, was not where she wanted to end up.
The difference between a key that works and a key that works for a week is whether the person making it actually verified the chip generation before handing it over.
