A guy was staying at a spot near the border in Nestor, over in Otay Mesa, when he came out one morning and his 2011 Tahoe just sat there. Key went in, turned, nothing.

No start. The theft deterrent light on the dash was staying solid instead of going out like it normally does when the car accepts the key. He figured the key was just worn and grabbed a spare he'd been keeping in his wallet for years. Same thing. That spare had probably never been programmed in the first place, or it had lost sync somewhere along the way.

He called the dealer first. They told him to tow it in and they'd get to it, probably the following day.

I met him in the lot. The issue was pretty clear once I connected to the OBD port. The immobilizer wasn't seeing a valid key signal. I generated a new transponder key, cut the blade to match his door lock right there in the van, and ran the programming sequence. The whole thing took under 45 minutes.

He asked about the old spare key afterward. I checked it too. It had never been properly enrolled. He'd been carrying a useless backup for who knows how long. We programmed that one as well while I was already set up.

The dealer comparison came up on its own when he saw how fast it went. He just shook his head. I didn't have to say anything.
